Shanna Noel

Bible journaling has certainly gained traction in the past few years and Shanna Noel has been at the forefront with her line called “Illustrated Faith.” A few months ago, I reached out to Shanna for an interview and she was gracious enough to give me a bit of her time. I am a huge fan of her Illustrated Faith line and her products are of great quality. The monthly kits that are offered are a great way to get started in bible journaling. I highly recommend them.

In fact, Illustrated Faith is turning TWO! Shanna is having a sale where you can get 50% OFF purchases in the Print & Pray section, as well as 50% OFF her amazing workshops! Join in the celebration from September 1st to the 7th and enjoy the 50% OFF SALE!

Now, let’s learn a little bit more about Shanna and Illustrated Faith!

1) How did you get started in the scrapbooking industry?

I started like I think most people do, just falling in love with documenting our story with pretty paper and stickers! I started sharing how I was documenting our life on forums and galleries and was quickly welcomed by the amazing and inspiring scrapbook community! Before I knew it I was being asked to be on design teams and from there started to design product! It was fun and inspiring, I was just pinching myself on how quickly everything happened!
 2) What was the impetus for creating Illustrated Faith?
I had always struggled to ready my bible and have a personal relationship with Christ. When I started bible journaling everything changed for me! I took my love for scrapbooking and combined it with documenting my walk with God and light bulbs turned on all over the place!!!! I was so excited on how God was using this in my life and started to share this process I called bible journaling! As our community began to grow I had many people coming up to me asking my about my “company” and if I was doing it “full time” – I was always confused by this and laughed but then I realized I was quickly becoming a business and I needed to make sure to set it off in the right direction. Illustrated Faith was born as an answer to those questions, and that prompting on my heart. We wanted to make beautiful faith based products that would inspire bible journaling as an approachable form of worship.
3) You recently paired up with Bella Blvd to add on to the Illustrated Faith line. How did that partnership come about?
I knew that if I was going to partner with a company I would need to find just the right company. Someone who saw the BIG vision, someone who knew it was about HIS message and not as much about business plans or numbers! Many companies approached me but none of them felt just right. When Bella Blvd approached me, I saw their heart on the manner right away and knew through prayer and conversation they were the perfect company to partner with. They not only saw that this was about so much more then scrapbooking in your bible, but about documenting your walk with God! They also saw the potential of Illustrated Faith and were willing to give it the time and energy it needed!
4) Bible journaling has taken off as a creative and spiritual outlet. What do you attribute that to?
I give it all to God! He planned this I really had very little to do with it! People are excited to have permission to worship God in a way that they were created, colorful, hands-on and personal! I am so excited to see people discovering bible journaling each and every day!
5) You’re a California girl too. What are your favorite places to visit in California?
I love California! We are from Sonoma County, Napa Valley area so anywhere around here is just beautiful but we also love heading into San Francisco! After living here almost our whole lives it is still a place to discover new things and go on fun adventures!
IMG_12206) Describe your creative process. What or who are your sources of inspiration?
I really try not to put too many limitations around my creative process, I feel like as creatives that is always changing and growing! As we find new inspiration or things that make that creative spark fly it is important to just allow time to cultivate that and PLAY!!!! Not everything you create as an artist needs to be a masterpiece, the important part is the process and not the product.
7) How do you balance your business, hobby and home life?
To be honest there were many months that I did not! I always felt like I was trying to catch up and running a million miles a minute! Since we closed our other business (an in home daycare) in September of 2015 I have been able to work on that work/life business! I think the most important thing to know when going into business for yourself is that it is going to come in waves! Some weeks I work 100 hours  a week and then other times I am able to take my Mom out to lunch in the middle of the day! The important thing is to be willing to do what works best for you! Work when you are inspired and give yourself a break when you are feeling blah! Sometimes I will tuck the kids in bed and then run over to the studio and work into the night, when inspiration strikes, go with it!
8) Besides scrapbooking and bible journaling, what do you enjoy doing for fun?
I love having time with my husband and kids! When we are able to get out and do something just the four of us, that is a time to cherish! As my oldest goes into high school I feel the clock ticking on that time and I just want to soak it in as much as possible! We love packing up the dogs and heading to the beach or heading to the movies for the latest summer flick!

9) What words of advice and wisdom do you have for today’s scrapbookers and bible journalers?
Find YOUR voice! So often people will get absorbed in soaking up all the inspiration they can and will copy all the bible journaling pages on Pinterest or Instagram and while that is great you really need to start by finding YOUR voice, your heartbeat with God and document that!
10) What is your favorite Bible verse or psalm that keeps you grounded?
Whenever I am asked this question, I always say the last bible verse I journaled lol! Today the answer for that would be: 1 Thessalonians 5:11New International Version (NIV)

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

I would like to extend a huge thanks to Shanna for a wonderful interview. Don’t forget to take advantage of her 50% OFF sale going on from September 1st to the 7th! Illustrated Faith ROCKS!
